Period 5 + 6 Friday 4th December
Scenario : S.L.A.R. session in Art Room with Ms. Harrington + Ms. Carter, 80 minutes
The session begins with the teachers both explaining to me what they’re doing, so I know what i'll be observing - they explain that they have a certain amount of books to get through from the 3rd years work and are working through it together - there must be at least 2 teachers present and each notebook’s descriptor must be negotiated between the two until a descriptor is decided.
The descriptors are written up on the laptop in a graph format for each student and a few sentences about the work is written up giving reason for the result
The two sit at the table and discuss the work, paying special attention to their use of support study artists, their experimentation and development of ideas - can the reader clearly see how the student has been on a journey from a mere concept to a realization of work? What materials has the student used? How relevant is their area of enquiry to their original visual mind map? All these factors come into play
It seems the most popular descriptor among these students is between ‘in with with’ and ‘above’ expectations, and something I didn't know is that in order to really make them on their work you must first consider the overall ability of the class, and that if, for instance, one student was awarded ‘above’ then another student who also was rewarded this descriptor must have handed up work of the same quality. Supposedly ‘in line with’ is a disappointing result and so they both are approaching the work with optimism and want the best for the students and try to make them very fairly
They analyse each workbook for about 10 minutes each which seems a tiresome and laborious process, but it must happen in order for a fair result for each student to come out of it.
There are a few comparisons made between workbooks to make sure it is fair
