Observation Nine

Updated: Jan 31, 2021

Period 2 Friday 11th December

Scenario: 6th year Art - Ms. Harrington, 40 minutes

  • Students are concerningly ate to this class which isn't addressed whatsoever - the teacher tells me she doesn’t lose the head at them as they are already battling through so much right now with exams and covid and she understand it can't be easy on them- this amount of empathy is admirable but a little too soft in my opinion, as they are an exam year and need to be using their hours to complete their workbook.

  • There's another observing UCD student called Sadbh whos also doing the same as me but is encouraged to take part to help out in the class

  • There are only 12 in this class - very small group

  • Ms.Harrington asks them to please get their art packs and sit down to wait for instruction

  • She asks them to please continue to work on your drawings of your primary sources, and ask herself or Ms. O’brien for help if needed.

  • The students seem to be working from sources that are actually taken from the stockroom

  • The teacher really does her own thing and gets on with her own work

  • She gets up to help when there is about 15 minutes left to make sure they are working and answers any questions they have an dmakes comments and suggestions in a positive way

  • I think that the way she leaves them at it is good. Not always down their backs about what they're doing.

  • Students pack up at 2 minutes ot the bell and leave in pod groups
