Observation Three

Updated: Jan 31, 2021

Period 3 Wednesday 18th November

Scenario: 3rd year Art - Ms. Carter, 40 minute class

  • Students take a good ⅞ minutes to arrive for class and there's a lot of walking around - seems to be a challenge to get everyone settled for a while. From seeing this class in action before, it's clear there are many strong personalities in class - Will be interesting to see how they are handled.

  • Students gather by the cupboard to collect art packs for their group

  • In this class, The teacher is introducing the booklet for the CBA and how they must be filled in - the student listen attentive and after speaking, Ms. Carter allows time for questions

  • Students are getting confused by me being here and are asking me questions instead

  • The questions that they are asking are all topics she covered when she spoke about the book - not as attentive as I thought originally

  • Ms. Carter encourages students to remember ‘ ask a friend before you ask me’ which is a methodology that works well in this class and in my own practice. Students already know the answers they're just being needy, which is a difficult challenge as you are then needed as a teacher to spread yourself quite thinly, and this stops you from spending time and giving attention to the students who might be too shy to ask for help.

  • Students work away, chatting among themselves and Ms. Carter switches on some classical music. This works well as the volume is instantly turned down with student’s chat and instead they dive into their work- sets lovely atmosphere in th class

  • It's very clear that although Ms. Carter has only begun her job in the school since September, she has built a really heartwarming relationship with her students. They seem to see her as an ally, rather than someone who wants to make them miserable. She's very attentive and enthusiastic, and it reflects in the attitudes of her students

  • When helping students she uses language that doesn't dampen their motivation -” I love what you've done, but have you considered --”

  • Teacher allows for 5 minutes to clean up

What I have taken from Observing this class: Use of language - what really caught my eyes and ears was the teachers language when helping students who might not be producing exceptional work - how she encourages them and you can see how rewarding it is to have them have that light switch moment and the penny finally drops and they produce amazing results from the encouragement the teacher supplied. Lovely to see.
